Hotel Los Volcanes - San Jose Airport Hotel
A former mansion converted into a charming little hotel.
Hotel los Volcanes offers the old world ambiance but with modern facilities at reasonable prices. Nestled in the heart of the city, it is a true oasis just 5 minutes away from the international airport. Details as twenty foot-high paneled ceiling, polished wood wainscoting and solid double doors in an old-style building makes this little hotel stand out.

“Great location!”
Hotel Los Volcanes B&B – San Jose Airport Hotel
We stayed here for two nights, Mar 19-21, 2009. We paid $60/nt for a room with a double and twin bed, ceiling fan, tv, small bath with shower. A full and delicious breakfast was included but not taxes.
The location was great, just one block from the park and walkable to everything. There were 2 computers free to use in the living room and one in one of the other halls. The place was very secure and the reception folks were very friendly and helpful. They also paid the taxi fare to the airport when we departed, a nice touch.
We would stay here again.
“Perfect for you first night”
Hotel Los Volcanes B&B – San Jose Airport Hotel
We really enjoyed our 2 nights in this hotel.
It's conveniently located as it is only 5 min from the airport. and 1 block from the town center and central park.
The rooms were really nice and clean, with fans and cable TV. Staff was very friendly, they speak English and can give you good travel advise.
The patio in the back is gorgeous, you will enjoy your breakfast here. Breakfast is included in the price, choices from eggs and toast to gallo pinto and fresh fruit juices. A great start of the day!
The hotel also has free internet and a book exchange.
“Great location for a first and last night in Costa Rica”
Hotel Los Volcanes B&B – San Jose Airport Hotel
This is a great place to crash the first night, as it is only a five minute cab ride from the airport. The location also provides a great starting point for going to the airport for an early morning flight. At $55 per night per room, it's great value. The rooms are clean and the breakfast provided (included in the room rate) is quite sufficient. Since breakfast is served between 7 and 9, you will miss it, if you have an early morning flight, however.
The location, only a block away from Parque Central, also gives you an opportunity to have dinner at one of the many restaurants in central Alajuela, instead of having to take a cab.
Los Volcanes is great value for money.
“Good & Standard”
Hotel Los Volcanes B&B – San Jose Airport Hotel
We used this hotel as a place to stay when our plane got in late at night, and also as a place to stay before our trip out from the airport back home.
PROS
•Price
•Convenient
•Super Clean
•Close to airport
•Internet
•Cable
•Free taxi ride (just remind them if they don't bring it up!)
•Very good breakfast & coffee
CONS
•Sound travels
•People tend to leave early in the morning to go to airport, so if you want to sleep late you might hear them.
•Hot water does not last super long. I think they have it on a timer so that you don't stay in the shower too long.
Friendly staff, feels like a hostel. Rooms in the front of the hotel are noisier than in the back because they are near a road, so request one in the back if you are a light sleeper.
Additional comments:
They website says free shuttle service, but this in fact is a pay back system. So when you get to the airport, you get a regular official taxi (there is a window right before you leave the airport and the taxi's are orange) and pay him. The next day when we check out they minused the taxi ride from our bill.
Also when we were leaving the hotel, we asked them to call the cab and reminded them to pick up that tab as well. I have a feeling that this perk is something that you need to remind them of, since there are travelers that come and possibly don't know about free taxi rides.
We opted for the shared bathroom. It was clean and standard.
I recommend this hotel as a convenient place to stay coming into and leaving San Jose airport. And it is one of the cheapest places around, which makes it a good deal.
“Very clean - great value”
Hotel Los Volcanes B&B – San Jose Airport Hotel
Judging from the review right before this one, I guess expectations play a big role in how you view a place.
Here's the way I see it: I paid $25 for a single with shared bath - the room was perfectly adequate - very clean - in my opinion, earplugs are essential when traveling, so I wasn't bothered at all by noise and slept well - the hot water was a bit spotty, but did I mention I paid $25 (I wasn't expecting the Four Seasons). And the breakfast (which is included in the price) was very substantial and tasty, and the little patio that it was served on was very nice. And as for the cab reimbursement - they did pay for one way, which is exactly what I understood they would from the website, and I thought that was a good deal considering how inexpensive the place was in the first place. And the cab ride was about ten minutes from the airport and cost $4.
There are banks, restaurants, and super markets within a couple of blocks - and you can catch a bus into San Jose about 5 blocks away (less than $1)
Feel free to email directly if you have any specific questions.
“Good little hotel”
Hotel Los Volcanes B&B – San Jose Airport Hotel
We spent our last night in Costa Rica at Los Volcanes and found it comfortable and clean, although very basic. Good location too and free ride to the airport, which is only 5-10 minutes away. The building is very lovely, the desk staff helpful and the free breakfast very good. It has a bit of a hostel feel to it due to the casual lobby with computers (free internet) and the shared bath. One downside was sporatic hot water. Not sure whether they have rooms with private baths, since we took the only one available. Would definitely go back and recommend to my friends.
“Great Stay in Alajuela”
Hotel Los Volcanes B&B – San Jose Airport Hotel
My wife and I spent a part of our honey moon here in between traveling to other parts of Costa Rica.
From the first day there we found the people very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. Plus the rates were extremely affordable, they paid for transit from the airport (which is about 5 minutes away), and they provided a very tasty and free breakfast each morning.
The location was fine but appeared a bit intimidating at first as every place has bars and locks on it. We didn't have any problems but this isn't the ideal place if you're not used to the inner-city feel.
Otherwise, we had a great experience and would go again!
“Cheap place, near airport”
Hotel Los Volcanes B&B – San Jose Airport Hotel
Los Volcanes is a great hotel about 10 minutes from the airport. The hotel paid our cab far on the return.
The hotel is cheap and provides you with breakfast. We had four people in our hotel room as we put one mattress on the ground which I slept on. The beds are basic but the breakfast is good. They make you eggs to order, fruit, gallo pinto and juice. It is a great place and I would stay there again.
Email me with questions.
“Clean Hotel!”
Hotel Los Volcanes B&B – San Jose Airport Hotel
This is the perfect hotel to stay at to get to the airport on time! Hotel staff very friendly and helpful. Hotel one of the cleanest I stayed in in all of Costa Rica. Breakfast delicious and filling. Hotel close to airport, taxi service free of charge. Also close to shopping and restaurants.
“repeat visitors”
Hotel Los Volcanes B&B – San Jose Airport Hotel
This is our third time to stay at this place. Clean, friendly, helpful.
It is only two blocks from the square and only 5 minutes from the airport. They pay for your cab from or to the airport. One or the other.
We find it convenient to stay there if you have no need to go into San Jose. They are also partnered with Mntezuma Expeditons for which you can get hotel stay AND transport ot the Nicoya Peninsula or they even have a coast to coast deal.
Breakfast is included in the hotel stay, but if you have a flight that leaves early you will probably not get anything. Breakfast time is 0700. Our flight was at 0730 and being at the airport two hours early we missed even coffee, which would have been nice.
There is free internet access.
“Beautiful, more then we expected!”
Hotel Los Volcanes B&B – San Jose Airport Hotel
I booked the the hotel/shuttle to Montezuma pakage for our yoga retreat and we were so pleased. The rooms are clean, spacious and beautiful. The main building has high ceilings and hardwood/tile fools. The attached rooms have queen beds, good sized bathrooms and white tile throughout. The common room has free internet and a great place to chat. The patio where they serve breakfast is wonderful and the food (we had breakfast which was included) was great. Not only were they wonderful in the beginning of our trip but 6 group members were delayed 5 days because of a snow storm back in the States and they arranged for them to stay the night again and then helped them find accomadations for the remainder of their stay. The only thing I will mention to those of you who are not used to traveling in Costa Rica is that their hot water in the showers is electric and not very realible in some rooms. However, it is in the 80s and humid and this was a non-issue for our group. We will definitely stay here again for our next retreat in 2008.
“A great stop-over place!”
Hotel Los Volcanes B&B – San Jose Airport Hotel
Hotel Los Volcanes in Alajuela, Costa Rica is a good place to overnight when transiting through San Jose International Airport. It is centrally located near the City Square and Cathederal in Alajuela, and is probably a good "home base" for anyone interested in a few days in that city. We stayed there at the start and end of our trip to Costa Rica.
The hotel covers the cost of your taxi to and from the airport - a nice touch.
The rooms are small and a bit dark - at least the ones we had - but they are comfortable and well-appointed. The showers claim to have hot water, but it is of the Central American variety - there is a small heater attached to the shower head. You may need the staff to tell you how this works. There was no AC in the room we used, but there was a good overhead fan. The rooms have a phone and a television set.
Street noise is a bit intrusive, but it didn't stop us from getting a good sleep.
Breakfast is included, and is very good. You will be ordering from a small menu - it is not buffet. The little courtyard where breakfast is served is very pleasant.
The Hotel has free Internet and a small library of books. The young man who was running everything when we visited is patient, polite, and very helpful - but a bit overworked ! Don't expect him to jump to your needs immediately - he will probably be checking one customer in as he checks another out while talking on the phone AND trying to eat his lunch. He will get to you - but give him time.
There are washers and dryers, but the signs say "laundry mats for hotel use only. If you need this service please ask staff." I imagine you could get your clothes washed and dried if you need this done.
All in all, a very nice little place.
“Lovely Little Hotel”
Hotel Los Volcanes B&B – San Jose Airport Hotel
Our entire extended family booked this hotel when my son was married in Costa Rica over Thanksgiving, 2006. The hotel is clean, very secure and comfortable. Coffee is usually ready by about 6 a.m. for early risers, and breakfast is prepared and served to order. Prices are reasonable, and everything was as it had been promised. The hotel works with Montezuma Expeditions and were able to arrange several day trips for wedding guests.
The hotel is only a few minutes from the airport, and is near the center of Alajuela, a safe and walkable town.
I highly recommend it.
“Nice spot”
Hotel Los Volcanes B&B – San Jose Airport Hotel
We spent a night here to catch an early-ish flight the next morning. I liked the hotel and the rooms, though the staff were a bit hard to track down. We made a phone reservation a couple nights before and had no problems. They even tracked down the resident English speaker to help out. Breakfast was good and there was internet access in the lobby/lounge. I like the location, just a block off from the Central Park, with a nice Chinese restaurant down the street. One recommendation: try to avoid a room at the front. It's on a street with a fair amount of traffic and it was pretty noisy.
“Very friendly and comfortable”
Hotel Los Volcanes B&B – San Jose Airport Hotel
Great little hotel for exploring the Central Valley!
Very close to the airport and the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.
“Un bijou !”
Hotel Los Volcanes B&B – San Jose Airport Hotel
