“Lovely”

These villas a lovely, but have a few problems. They are currently completing additional hotel rooms at the rear of the property and the work started at 7am every morning. These works over look the pool, and therefore you have the workmen staring at you while you sunbath.
The villas are very very nice and very clean, there are bugs, but you get that is most places.
Its a 100m walk to the beach, and there are not so many places to eat near by, but you have a kitchen which is great for cooking.

Daniel, the onsite manager, did a great job on all requests, e.g., where to rent surfboard, where to eat out, etc.
The hotel grounds were kept well groomed and clean. The pool was part of our routine after surfing and playing in the surf. The beach is just a short walk away.
We stayed in the 1 room bungalow with stove, fridge, A/C, hot showers...it's porch was great to hang for meals or when we had brief rainstorms.
Overall great location, good value, great privacy, secure.
“Excellent”

We stayed at the Esencia Santa Teresa in August. The location is perfect for surfing. 100 meters walk through the jungle to the beach, at probably the best advanced surfers spots. Completely unspoiled. clean, white sand. Great waves. And this is where Malpais Surfcamp takes its videos so you can be a star!
The hotel itself is, simply said, beautiful. The grounds are meticulously landscaped. The cabins sleep between 4-5 people. We were 5 in a single cabin, and it was just fine. They have an outside shower for washing off after the beach (in addition to the full shower inside). They have a basic kitchen which in our case continously pumped out food for 3 hungry teenage surfers. Supermarket is a few hundred meters away. A/C was great. As were most things.
The staff were, without exception, extremely helpful and friendly. From the first reception to the final checkout, including the people in the office, the cleaning crew and the groundskeeper Pollo.
Santa Teresa is a surfer's paradise, and the non-surfers amongst us had a great time too. Since its all stretched out along a single, long, strip, its a good idea to rent a bike.
“Nice hotel”

The setting: There are lots of beautiful vegetation: palm trees, mature, tall trees, etc. You look out the window and you see green all over the place, and it's very shady.
The hotel: It consists of several individual cabins (bungalows). They have a very nice architecture and are painted in a nice shade of yellow.
The cabin: The front porch has wooden furniture. It has a bedroom, kitchen/dining, a sofa bed, and a bathroom. It has high ceilings with beautiful woodwork. The bedroom can be made private by pulling some roman shades. The windows have the same kind of shades, made of a material that imitates bamboo. The bathroom is nice, with nice light fixtures. The kitchen is equipped with sink, fridge, stove, pots and pans and some china and utensils. It also has a coffee maker.
You should be aware of the following: The hotel only provides toilet paper and liquid hand soap. You have to bring your own body soap, shampoo and conditioner. There is no phone in the room. Also no TV (if that is important to you).
The front desk: It is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. They can help you with tours and transportation.
The beach: It is beautiful if you just want to watch it. The ocean is too rough to swim/wade in it. I would not dare to let kids swim in that ocean. It is great for surfing, though.

Great place on the north side of town, 2 minute walk to the beach. Was the best looking place I saw in the area ( unless you want to pay 500 a night ). Rooms sleep 4 comfortably and had a kitchen, fridge etc. Very nice!!!!!!!
“tropical home away from home”

We ended up in Santa Teresa last year after a 6 hour drive through the country. Had the lady with me, so no $10 a night rooms this time.
We found the Esencia, beautiful grounds, nice pool, weight room palapa, kitchens, A/C which we didn't need, 2 minute walk to the surf, excellent.
The staff were very nice, professional.
Can't wait to return, it will always be a special place!
“Awesome!”

This place is amazing. 1/2 minute walk to the beach (99% of hotels in Santa Teresa / mal pais are NOT on the beach the government has restricted building on the beach). Close enough to walk to any number of food establishments (if it hasn't been pouring rain the mud makes it REALLY hard to walk rent some sort of vehicle like a bike). Each room has a kitchen and private bath. Hanging out on the porches was a great way to meet people. There is a little bar which I hear is open in the high season Stefano let us watch tv there the day it rained for 24 hours straight. Speaking of... Stefano and Camillo the two guys who work at the hotel are the most helpful people ever. They arranged car rental, day trips, told us the best places to eat, where the parties were, you name it they can help you with it! The pool was great, basically everything was GREAT! I can't say enough about how wonderful a time I had at this hotel. You won't regret staying at the Esencia!
“Great little place, hidden from town!”

We enjoyed our stay at Esencia during a recent trip to Malpais. The town was ravaged by rain, but Esencia remained a little oasis in the middle of it all. Despite some landscaping issues (the rain basically caused a mudslide throughout the property) Stefano, the manager, was apologetic and very gracious. The cabins are new, spacious and well-appointed, with full kitchens, nice bathrooms and a patio. The pool is set atop the hill and is also well-kept. We saw monkeys in the trees just behind the property and iguanas sunning themselves on the rooftops. We'd like to return to Malpais when the waves are better and the rain hasn't wrecked the roads and property. When we do, we'd definitely stay at Esencia again.

The waters of the Pacific Ocean are home to many different species of fish. The species most frequently caught on our trips are listed below.
Tuna – Yellow fin tuna are the most common species of tuna found in the waters off the coast. They are most abundant in the rainy season months when floating logs and other debris are found in the ocean. There are other species of tuna in the area including Skipjack and Big eye Tunas, but the most prized catch is the Yellow fin.
Mahi-Mahi - Also known as Dolphin fish or Dorado, Mahi-Mahi is one of the most exciting offshore game fish to catch and see in the open ocean. When hooked, these beautiful fish "light up" with almost neon colors and put up an exciting, high jumping, tail walking fight. Commonly found near floating objects such as tree branches and other natural debris the rivers wash into the ocean. They feed on the sealife which seek shelter near and in the floating structures, such as flying fish, squid and other small fish.
Sailfish - One of the most predominant species here on the Pacific Coast waters of Costa Rica. You should expect to see many free jumpers and excessive amounts of sailfish during the months of December through May. An exciting fish to reel in, as it performs spectacular jumps out of the water and puts up a good fight. We always practice catch and release with the billfish.
Mackerel - Spanish mackerel prefer open water but are sometimes found over deep grass beds and reefs, as well as shallow water estuaries. They form large, fast-moving schools that migrate great distances along the shore When a large school is found; the action is often fast and furious.
Wahoo – If you love speed then Wahoo is your breed. Considered to be the fastest fish with great endurance, it is a strong fight when hooked. The area is not known to hold great numbers of these fast fish, but you never know. They are found year round in random numbers, however one of these as a catch can provide a GREAT DINNER!
Marlin – Blue, Stripped and Black Marlin is one of the foremost big game species in Costa Rica. The marlin has exceptional size and strength, and is a powerful, aggressive fighter. It runs hard and long, sounds deep, and leaps high into the air in a seemingly inexhaustible display of strength. Marlin is normally found roaming deep waters and congregating near reefs where they find their prey.
Snook - The Snook is a powerful fish and a thrilling catch, much like the freshwater Largemouth Bass. That is one of the reasons why it is one of the most sought after and prized game fish to catch. Once hooked its strength and speed is hard to compare to any other game fish of its size.
Snapper – Many different species of snapper reside in the waters off the coast of Montezuma including red snapper, yellowtail snapper and spotted rose snapper. They are found year round near the shore, over deep reefs and rocky bottoms. Their tasty white meat is a delicacy and provides a delicious dinner.
