Amor de Mar Latest Reviews Hotel Amor de Mar - Montezuma Costa Rica

Hotel Amor de Mar: "Serenity at its Best"

My wife and I stayed at the Amor de Mar from June 4th-8th '07. From the moment we arrived I knew it would be a trip to remember. Our room was spectacular. We stayed in the Casa Luna, which has enough room to house 10 guests. It had a full kitchen which was a nice ammenity. Natural wood decor and exotic flowers throughout the whole place, provided a warm ambiance. The breakfast is all natural and it is the best in Montezuma! The staff are very courteous and willing to help you anytime. It was very peaceful and quiet, the perfect place for our honeymoon. The Amor de Mar sits right on the beach, but it is not ideal if you are looking to lay in the sand. You will have to travel a little bit down the road to find a good sandy area. The shores are rocky and the surf is a bit strong, so caution should be taken. I recommend surfer shoes to protect your feet, which can be purchased in Montezuma. The town of Montezuma has a wonderful array of shops to satisfy a shoppers appetite. If you are hungry I recommend the Italian restaurant at the corner or Pizza Net. Cocolores is one of the best places to eat, a definate stop for nice dinner. There are plenty of places to get drinks too.

Overall Amor de Mar is the perfect place to get away from the fast paced life, a place where time is a thing of the past. A place to relax and enjoy nature at its best.

We loved the Amor de Mar and hope you enjoy your stay there too.

Hotel Amor de Mar: "Loved everything about it"

Checked in after closing on Thursday June 14, the desk was closed and the Security Guard Alfredo was helpful in getting us in our room. We checked in the next morning. breakfast was bountiful, the fresh fruit and yogurt was wonderful as well as the banana pancakes. The property was laid back spotless and I cant say enough good things about it. Would go back tomorrow if I could.

Montezuma is a laid back peaceloving hippie village, dont expect a glamorous resort city. The beer is cold and cheap and the food good.

Hotel Amor de Mar: "Surpassed my expectations!"

I was a little hesitant to book a room at Amor de Mar after reading the mixed reviews posted on this site. I am SO glad I went for it. My husband and I stayed in room #7, on the second floor, facing the road. You could definitely hear the traffic on the road, but it didn’t bother us in the least – maybe because we live in NYC? The room doesn’t have a view of the water, but again we weren’t bothered because we didn’t really spend a lot of time in the room. The location is ideal – a quick walk (10 minute stroll) to the center of town, even closer to some restaurants, and literally across the street from the waterfalls. We thought the price was very reasonable and the staff incredibly helpful. They arranged to pick us up at the local “airport” and dropped us off again – it was seamless. They also provided maps and directions to other towns. The breakfast was wonderful. We knew it was an additional price for breakfast, and compared to some of the other restaurants in tow, we thought the price was very fair. There are NO ATMs in the town, so bring lots of cash, or else you’ll have to take a taxi to another town and hope your card works! I would absolutely book another trip to stay at the Amor de Mar. We left with zero complaints and STILL reminisce about our afternoon naps in the hammocks.

Hotel Amor de Mar: "Best hotel in Montezuma"

We stayed in a twin room with a sea view - a must in this hotel. Fantastic wooden balcony access + dining area. The garden is stunningand perfect for chilling out in the hammocks.
The rooms get hot at night though - just a small fan available.
Breakfasts worth booking there, particularly the Sunday buffet.
The local bus stops from right outside the hotel to take you up to Cabo Blanco National Park. Take one of the walks through the forest to the beach.

Hotel Amor de Mar: "Great location, but not a good value"

Well lemme start by saying the setting is amazing. Beautiful backyard, great hammocks. Very peaceful. but on the other hand, $80 a night for a room with cold water, no A/C and no view was VERY hard to swallow. Not to mention the cockroach the size of my hand that crawled up my girlfriend's leg. So you figure, allright we will just go have breakfast and forget about this....you order breakfast and then come to find out they will charge you on your final bill.....so the breakfast isn't even included! Good luck finding a sign stating this anywhere. Oh and bring cash for the room (even though the nearest ATM is a 15 minute drive) cause they will charge you the 16% percent tax if you pay with a Credit Card)

I mean the hotel is nice, but for the price, VERY VERY disappointing.

Hotel Amor de Mar: "Beautiful place"

We stayed in the Casa Luna from March 10-12. The house was clean and spacious, but poorly lit at night. The views from the upstairs were beautiful! One word of caution-the bottom step on the inside stairs tends to blend in with the floor-I missed the step going down one evening and nearly fell, and our oldest daughter missed the step one evening, fell, and split open her chin. Also, use the mosquito netting at night-our oldest daughter got quite a few bites the one night because we didn't use the netting.
We loved relaxing in the hammocks and watching the surf. It felt like a small piece of paradise!
One major drawback is that the property is situated right next to the road. We heard many ATV's roaring past.
We ate the buffet breakfast on Sunday, and although it was good, we felt it was overpriced.
It's a 5-10 minute walk to town, but Lucy's, a good restaurant, is next door.
Even though there were some major drawbacks-daughter falling, noisy at times...we loved it!

Hotel Amor de Mar: "Wonderful view, very laid back"

We stayed at Amor de Mar in Montezuma for our honeymoon and loved every minute of being there...we only stayed 2 days and wanted to stay longer. We reserved the #6 room, which is on the corner of the 2nd floor and has a queen sized bed. The windows are all screen windows and look out over the ocean and the room was very simple but spacious. It's at the very edge of the town, across from the entrance to the trail to the town's waterfall (it's a nice waterfall with a hole you could swim in and by chance we saw holler and capuchin monkeys, as well as iguanas). There are plenty of places to lay or sit out on the lawn...wooden chairs, several big hammocks, or rocks by the tide pool. The food is simple and fresh and the homemade bread is great. Plus the patio where the dining area is set up offers a WONDERFUL view. I would recommend booking a 2nd floor room for a better view, specifically #6. It's the most expensive room I think, but overall the hotel is very reasonable for the view it offers. **The staff was very friendly, but travelers should be aware that there really wasn't a front desk after 4 or 5, just a security guy.

Hotel Amor de Mar: "Very nice, but stay on the second floor!"

This hotel is great, especially if you stick to the second floor. Not only does it have a beautiful balcony overlooking the ocean, but it has plenty of comfortable wood chairs. More importantly, the rooms on the first floor open onto the open air dining area, making for very noisy rude awakenings in the morning. Not only that, but the first floor has a painted concrete floor rather than the beautiful wood floors on the second. Thirdly, the first floor has the small, oranged legged crabs common around the area, trying to climb in at night and suceeding!
We stayed on the first floor the first night in montezuma, before moving to the second floor's beautiful room 6 for the following three. The breakfast is indeed good. the lawn and hammocks, are wonderful, and the tidepools are fun for relaxing and exploring small marine life. I'd definitely stay here again.

Hotel Amor de Mar: "Gas was siphoned at the hotel, very very noisy street"

Stayed 2 nights at Amor de Mar.
We have stayed at over 20 places in C.R. over the years and never had a problem with safety, as long as we kept our car in the hotel's lot.
When we got to Amor de Mar, no one was at the reception desk and to this day we still don't know who runs the place. It turns out the restaurant is not open for dinner.
All Day and all night, these very noisy ATV's speed up and down the street, keep you awake and drown out the ocean. The people who rent them out probably buy their gas from guys who steal it from unsuspecting vistors like us.
When we got up at 4 AM to take the 6:30 ferry to
get out of this awful town, we noticed halfway to the next village that our truck had been siphoned.
There is no gas station in Montezuma. We turned back to go to Amor de Mar for help and the young man cleaning the place went to get the security guard who soon appeared with a pillow under his arm. He had obviously been asleep. After our insisting, he found gas in the shed and gave us enough to get to the next town where we waited for the gas station to open.
We just made it on time.
The hotel is right on the main drag and it is very noisy indeed. Get a room at the back of the building if you can.

Hotel Amor de Mar: "Awesome"
highly recommend this hotel, very clean, perfect location and extremely wonderful and helpful staff. can't wait to go back.

Hotel Amor de Mar: "Prettiest setting I've ever seen"

Amor de Mar is one of the prettiest hotels I've ever laid eyes on. It has a gorgeous lawn that slopes down to the ocean. Breakfast is served on a terrace overlooking the lawn. The rooms aren't much to write home about, just a basic bed and bathroom, but the setting is heaven on earth.

Hotel Amor de Mar

Fodor's Review:

Take the time to walk the ¼ mi south of town to find this ruggedly handsome, two-story wooden hotel across from the waterfall's entrance. A grassy lawn stretches to the rocky seashore, where you can cool off in a natural tidal pool or in a palm-shaded hammock. It has a peaceful and intimate atmosphere, coupled with great homemade breakfasts. The wood-paneled rooms are rustic but comfortable; second-floor rooms have more windows. Two of the rooms share a bathroom and are a few bucks cheaper. A two-story, equipped oceanfront house has four bedrooms.

…Our hotel, Amor de Mar, was easily the best place we stayed on our trip. Talk about a tropical oasis. Hammocks strung between palm trees and mango trees over a lush green lawn leading down to a rocky shore where you could dip into a warm tide pool at low tide. The building is rich, dark wood, with handrails made from carefully smoothed and polished branches. Scented ylang-ylang grows in a little garden. It's just the right distance from town - close enough to walk easily, far enough to be away from the noise of the partying surf kids. For breakfast, a massive fruit plate with mango, watermelon, papaya and more, or maybe a fruit smoothie with homemade yoghurt and a slice of homemade bread. (And don't forget the Costa Rican coffee.) Absolutely idyllic.

We wandered through the town and over to the beach to get oriented. The ocean was a bit of a surprise to me - it's as warm as bathwater, and the waves and undertow are intensely strong. This shouldn't be a surprise, but I grew up in a place with brutally cold, strong and (mostly) unswimmable waves and now live in a place with gentle, slightly cool and pleasant waves. I'd never really experienced Costa Rica's particular combination before.
