National Museum. Housing an extensive collection of pre-Columbian objects and historical articles from colonial times and the beginning of the Republic.

The Gold Museum. Located in the Plaza de la Cultura, it displays a permanent exhibition of pre-Columbian objects created from this valuable and highly prized metal. 

Museum of Contemporary Art. Containing a wonderful collection of paintings and sculptures created by local artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. 

The Natural Science Museum. Over 1,500 species, some of which are now extinct, are housed in this delightful museum which lies at the extreme south-east of the La Sabana Metropolitan Park.

National Theater. An architectural jewel which, since its construction in 1897, has been regarded as a symbol of Costa Rican culture.

The most popular local specialties are "Casado", a dish of rice, beans, plantain, meat and salad, "Chorreadas", thick corn tortillas and "Empanadas" (pasties) filled with cheese, beans or meat.

Other very popular dishes in the region are Tamales, rice with chicken, "Picadillo de Arracache" (minced arracache root with pork or veal) and "Papa con Carne" (meat and potato stew).There are numerous restaurants in Costa Rica, serving not only regional culinary specialties but also specializing in international cuisine.

If the natural environment of Costa Rica is glorious, its craftsmanship is no less attractive. Objects created from precious woods, the roots of the coffee bush, banana paper, clay and gold, and utensils made from smelted iron and other materials, are all meticulously worked by the skillful local craftspeople.
Reproductions of Pre-Columbian art, indigenous pottery, pictures of daily life portrayed in vivid colors on banana leaves, jewelry, masks and painted wagons, are just some of the most popular artworks in the country.
Exceptional local produce includes sugar cane creams and liquors, coffee and chocolate.
Local shops are usually open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. while shopping malls generally open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
