“I LOVED this place”
Beija Flor Resort - Mal Pais Costa Rica
We visited this hotel as part of a trip that involved 4 other cities and 5 other hotels and this was by far my favorite. I checked reviews AFTER I booked and was really nervous to see what people had written, particularly the reviews about it being dirty and infested with insects. I'll do the negatives first because there aren't many. The rooms were not dirty, but they were dark. There were definitely mosquitos and bugs everywhere, but I wore my repellant and brought the repellant plug in (available at walmart, home depot, etc..buy it here because it's harder to find once you're in Costa Rica) and neither me nor any of the 6 people I was traveling with got any new bites that night. Costa Rica is all jungle. You WILL get bug bites and you will see crazy bugs, no matter where you stay. The pool is small but is situated behind the rooms, so you can see the most amazing view of the stars while you're swimming at night. I should warn everyone that like every other pool we swam in while in Costa Rica, you will see bats if you swim at night. It's terrifying at first, but you get used to it. Other than that, I have no qualms about recommending this hotel and cannot wait to go back myself. The rooms (we got a free upgrade because the place wasn't full...we went during the rainy season) were adorable, the food at the restaurant is absolutely, hands-down, the best you will have in Costa Rica, and the outdoor bathroom, while off-putting at first, is actually really beautiful.
“Honeymoon in paradise”
Beija Flor Resort - Mal Pais Costa Rica
Ticos and Gringo’s alike appreciate this modern yet modest restaurant. The menu is simple and short but filled with unique and flavorful dishes.
Set in between the pool and hotel rooms, the restaurant in the Beija Flor Resort - Mal Pais Costa Rica is a modest wooden table & chair setting. Prices match those of a 3-star State side restaurant ($40 - $50 dinner for two). The same goes for the portion sizes; my wife and I ate at this hotel 7 out of 8 nights in Mal Pais and were frequently sharing starters and main entrées.
Joseph, the 25 year old Minnesota-native head chef, has a command of the dishes on the menu and makes daily purchases from the local fish wharf and produce farms. All the food on the plate is sourced within 10 km (6.6 miles) of the restaurant making for refreshing organic starter salads and fish plates.
We sampled every dish on the menu including deserts and here are some of our favorites.
My favorites:
Appetizer: Flatbread pizza with tuna and black olives.
Entrée: Chicken baked with mozzarella and red peppers
Dessert: Banana tostada over vanilla ice cream.
Beverage: Tinto Malbec (
My wife’s favorites:
Appetizer: Greek salad with feta, black olives and red peppers
Entrée: Yuca crusted Mahi Mahi
Dessert: Frosted Chocolate cake layered with walnuts & bananas.
Beverage: Mal Pais (rum, triple sec, pineapple & coconut)
“The best food I had in all of Costa Rica”
Beija Flor Resort - Mal Pais Costa Rica
Great place with a very nice staff. Very relaxed atmosphere and beautiful rooms. We could have used some more lightning there, because reading a book in your room was impossible.
Ernesto the waiter was great and gave us usefull tips to visit beaches etc. Joseph the coock deserves a special compliment, because his food was amazing.
“Beautiful, relaxing, worth it!”
Beija Flor Resort - Mal Pais Costa Rica
This is the best bet for your money kind of place. Its definitely mini-resort status and very relaxing. I will be back for sure and for a better located room with the fancy showers. We stayed in a room right next to the reception, which was totally fine. Fantastic room and decor, very sexy. Great a/c system because during the wet season, it can get very muggy. The restaurant- basically ate the same dish everyday- FISH TACOS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Beautiful people from all over the world work here. The only thing was that you had to walk down the road to the nearest beach, an ATV is advisable to get around quick and easy to Playa Carmen and the other local restaurant spots. However, there is no doubt you feel that coastal air and the smell of the thick rainforest. LOVE IT! Will be back.
“Great place to stay, with awesome food!”
Beija Flor Resort - Mal Pais Costa Rica
We only spent one night in Mal Pais and we chose Beija Flor. It was the right decision. The rooms were clean and spacious. The bathroom was awesome. Half indoors/half outdoors. The best thing about this hotel was the restaurant. The food there was the best I had during my 10 day trip to Costa Rica. Everyone there was friendly and accommodating. If you want to go to Mal Pais, Beija Flor is a great place to stay.
“The Best Bet in Mal Pais!!!”
Beija Flor Resort - Mal Pais Costa Rica
Wow Wow Wow!!! This is all that I can say about my stay and the level of service that I received this summer at Beija Flor Resort - Mal Pais Costa Rica. From the moment I arrived I knew we had selected the right hotel. The rooms were awesome, clean and that shower was out of this world(Half indoor half outdoor). The staff was great making sure that all of our needs were attended to. From arranging our tours and setting up first class spa treatments. The outdoor yoga deck is amazing and the surrounding natural landscape just steals your heart!! The food was off the charts, always offering many different selections and plenty of seafood. The best part of the stay was that Beija Flor does not break your wallet there are hotels in town that run 300 to 400 a night ?? What for this place has it all

“Simple and clean with good service.”
Beija Flor Resort - Mal Pais Costa Rica
The Beja Flor is a beautiful resort set in the rainforest. It is very peaceful and natural and very, very clean. I believe we went to the restaurant at least once a day if not twice. The food is some of the best in this area. Also, the pool area is lovely and well set up. The people are very nice and service is very good. I would recommend the Beja Flor to anyone who wants to have a nice vacation in Costa Rica (but be warned, it's a little hard to get to).
“stand up paddle boarders dream”
Beija Flor Resort - Mal Pais Costa Rica

“Amazing Wedding”
Beija Flor Resort - Mal Pais Costa Rica
When my fiance and I went looking for a place to have our wedding, Beija Flor immediately caught our eye. We were looking for a hotel with a garden (but near the beach) and we instantly feel in love with the huge Guanacaste tree in the backyard, a perfect setting for the ceremony. We sat down with Yoav and talked over our plans. Basically he let us have the wedding how we wanted and helped us out will all the details on site. They gave us the option of using a wedding planner but we didn't need it in the end and didn't mind organizing some things ourselves and save out money (flowers, cake, hair and makeup of the bride) and could negotiate a good price for food and drinks. Suner, Tania, Natascha and Anne (the girls of the reception) helped us out with everything possible and are oh so kind and helpful.
The wedding was amazing. Our guests loved the location and were crazy about the food. Joav and Chad had everything in control and we could really relax. After the ceremony, reception and dinner we danced the night away on the yoga deck (a wonderful big beautifully lit rancho in the back) and half the people ended up in the pool. In the end even the Beija Flor crew was dancing with us! Our honeymoonsuite (the mastersuite) was a a wonderful cool haven where we could sneak away from our guests and prepare us for the wedding and was given to us for free as a wedding gift, excellent.
After the wedding we heard a few guests had had small problems with the restaurant (apparently they were not always keeping track of expenses because nobody had to sign for their food and drinks), but in the end everything got sorted out and we are sure the new management will have everything under control soon.
All in all we had a wonderful time. The hotel is a true beauty and we can recommend it to anyone that is looking for something special and of the beaten track.
“Loved our time at Beija Flor!”
Beija Flor Resort - Mal Pais Costa Rica
We absolutely loved our 5 day stay at Beija Flor. The staff was GREAT and sooooo helpful. They answered every question we had, booked all our activites and even tracked down a lost wallet for us (thanks again!). The rooms were nice with comfy beds. The outdoor shower was very cool and I spent a lot of time laying out in the hammock listening to the birds, so peaceful! I would suggest renting a quad or car to anyone visiting Mal Pais since everything is so spread out there, it makes getting around so much easier. We did this for the last two days and wish we would have had it for the whole week.
The restaurant was one of the best parts of the hotel, everything was great there! The pool was also nice and I wish I would have had time to try out the gorgeous yoga deck...maybe next time! We couldn't say enough good things about Beija Flor!
“Peaceful”
Beija Flor Resort - Mal Pais Costa Rica
The staff was friendly and helpful. They always made themselves available to answer questions and suggest other services in the area. Wonderful, wonderful meals at the restaurant. I had the best risotto in the Americas, and wonderful yogurt, with fruit every morning. They were always willing to adjust the meal to met the needs of my picky son. Our casita was extremely clean. We loved the open-air shower, even although at night we were afaird of what we would find in the bathroom. Never once did we find a monkey or any other creature. One note you did not need an alarm clock the howler monkeys did the job, so you were up ready to hit the surf. The pool area was a great place to have a drink, read or swim. We loved the pool cabanas. Our casita was extremely roomy, peaceful and clean. I do suggest that the owners add some pictures to give the room some warmth. Our family really enjoyed Beija Flor.

“Clean and spacious.”
Beija Flor Resort - Mal Pais Costa Rica
Rooms basic, clean, spacious and minimalistic. The staff really friendly and helpful, great at providing information on local activities. A security guard walked the premises at night but felt safe throughout my stay. The meals served at the restaurant were delightful, nice eating area.
Although you can get around by foot, I opted to hire a car, found this very useful.
“it's all in the details at Beija Flor”
Beija Flor Resort - Mal Pais Costa Rica
we stayed an additional night at Beija Flor after booking three--it was so peaceful and relaxing. Hammocks on the front and back terrace. an indoor-outdoor bathroom, very comfortable beds, all featuring a kind of Zen-like simplicity of detail--down to the soothingly minimal lighting in the rooms, which are spacious and feature vaulted-wood ceilings. A fine pool, with a waterfall that filters noise. A great outdoor restaurant (with wifi, incidentally). We were told that the owner intends to install mini-refrigerators in the rooms soon--it's still a work in progress with on-site yoga pavillion just built--and outdoor massage available in another pavillion near the pool. A picturesque rock-strewn beach is a five-minute walk.
“Lovely”
Beija Flor Resort - Mal Pais Costa Rica
A lovely little hotel. We stayed in a suite with polished concrete floors, an outdoor shower and back porch hammock. On the last of our 4 night stay we were woken up by howler monkeys in the front yard. The women working in reception were very nice and eager to help. The only down side is that it is pretty far from town. Unfortunately the on road in Mal Pais is a long dirt road which made going into town for dinner or surfing a bit trying.
“Family Quality Time”
Beija Flor Resort - Mal Pais Costa Rica
We LOVED our 5 nigths at this magical property, our 2 littel girls will never forget this vacation, all day long in the pool (very freindly for kids) very relaxing kick back , super freindly staf, by the end of the stay they were family.
we stayed at the Villa, its very basic, clean, the outdoor shower is an adventure, the food is extra ordinary for Costa Rica.
The Girls do not stop talking about the animals they met at the property.
The all time we almost did not go out of the hotel. Time fly when its fun.
Thank you guys, we will be back next year (keep the cheff)
“I'll Be Back Next Year”
Beija Flor Resort - Mal Pais Costa Rica
My vacation to Costa Rica was by far the best trip I have ever taken and I owe it all to Beija Flor and the fine people who make it what it is.
First off I wanted my trip to be packed full of activities and not the usual lay around the pool getting bloated on beer and daiquiris. The great people at reception, Nadia and Sonya, hooked me up and organized, horseback riding through the jungles, ATVing in the mountains, zip lining through the canopies and surfing in the ocean.
After an afternoon of surfing I needed serious refuge from the sun which I found in our minimalist and spacious bedroom. The rooms at Beija Flor are a perfect escape if you've had too much sun. They are dark, cool and calming with a very comfortable queen size bed and air conditioning. After I felt more cooled off I moved outside to the hammock that hangs right outside the room. Lying in a hammock with mild sun stroke can really get your appetite going. This brings me to what I consider to be the pinnacle of Beija Flor, their restaurant.
This restaurant is what separates Beija Flor from any other nice place with a pool. Out of this restaurant came the best dishes I have ever had the pleasure of digesting and the man behind it all is a great guy named Chris. His culinary genius, paired with an ever changing menu, practically forces you to eat at Beija Flor everyday. To top it off the service in the restaurant is the friendliest and most accommodating one could ask for. Thanks again to Chad, Matt, Cheva (sorry about the spelling) and Kristin for making the stay that much more enjoyable.
With a relaxed ambient soundtrack scoring your stay, you will find the atmosphere welcoming, intimate and unforgettable. I know I did.
“I adore the Beija Flor!”
Beija Flor Resort - Mal Pais Costa Rica
We just got back from our 10 day trip to Costa Rica and the Beija Flor was our favorite place along the way. This hotel may be an acquired taste but after reading some of the negative reviews I think those people might need to lighten up and live a little ...
The rooms are plain, there is no t.v. and no radio. Yet, this is exactly why we came to Costa Rica - to relax! One thing that bothered me was that there was no clock and since our cell phones no longer worked we really were lost on what time it was when we woke up everyday. The rooms are pretty dark and could use some better lighting.
The bathrooms are at first a little scary since they are outside and who knows what could be out there, but after the first night I got over it and throughly enjoyed having a cold shower with the sun beating down.
Yes, there are bugs. But, as one of the staff members put it, "We are in the middle of the jungle." And it's true, once again I am not sure what anyone would expect. My husband and I would put a towel at the bottom of the door to prevent them from coming in and the problem was solved.
The best part of the hotel is the common area/restaurant ... what a chill place to hang out and meet other travelers. The staff was so helpful and fun to talk to ... beers were only $2 which means they weren't up-charging because they are a hotel. The food was REALLY good, although for the price of the room I do agree that there should be some sort of breakfast included. There is free wi-fi in the common area and by the pool as well.
The pools were clean and well taken care of, as was the rest of the place. Everyday our cleaning lady did a great job of tidying up our room and providing us with clean towels.
Overall, we had a really great time at Beija Flor and had the opportunity to meet some very cool people. Next visit to Mal Pais and I am sure we will stay again.
“Fantastic little hotel”
Beija Flor Resort - Mal Pais Costa Rica
We wanted a quiet little place on the beautiful coast of Mal Pais. The hotel is basically a yoga resort (with the most stunning roofed, outdoor yoga space), but it can certainly function as a romantic destination for those who are not into Yoga (we didn't take up any classes). The only bad thing is that despite the fact that the beach is across the road, the hotel is a mile away from the stretch of better beach. This however could be a blessing, as this also means that you are located a mile from the bustling center of the little surfing town of Mal Pais. And, though we enjoyed surfing for the first time, it was nice to cycle back at night to the warm atmosphere of the hotel's excellent restaurant, or to the best Soda (local restaurant) in the area, located a 5 minute walk north of the hotel. This Soda, by the way, is right on the beach and a must for sunset. The rooms are simple but well composed, the hotel is very clean, and the staff was really friendly, making us feel very welcomed.
